A coding assistant that works across the editor and the platform: completions and chat in the IDE you already use, a cloud agent on GitHub.com, code review on pull requests, and a CLI. It asks you to change the least: the editor stays, the keybindings stay, and the decision is closer to adding a subscription than to adopting a tool.
Who is buying changes the answer
An individual seat and an organization plan are not the same purchase, and a team does not always end up on the one a developer tried alone. GitHub prices them separately on its own plans page, per user for individuals and per granted seat for organizations, and the figure at the top of this profile is the individual one.
GitHub attaches a qualifier to that price that most vendors do not, printing it in the same cell: free for some users. Its documentation names verified students, verified teachers and maintainers of popular open source projects as eligible for Copilot at no cost, and it now splits the plan by source: verified students get a distinct Copilot Student plan with unlimited completions, while the docs attach free access for teachers and open source maintainers to Copilot Pro. If you are one of those, the entry price on this page is not the price you pay, and it is worth checking before comparing it with anything.
The free plan is the unusual one in this category, because of the two tools profiled here it is the only one that answers with numbers rather than with the word limited. The figure at the top of this profile is from the current billing documents: 2000 code completions a month plus a monthly allowance of GitHub AI Credits, with chat billed in credits. GitHub's marketing FAQ still prints an older figure counting 50 chat requests; the billing documents and its own AI Credits FAQ have both moved to credits, so we quote the billing authority and not the leftover, and our methodology sets out why we carry a vendor's qualifier rather than trimming it.
Copilot now spans more than the editor. The cloud agent on GitHub.com is gated at Pro, code review on Free is limited to the Review selection in VS Code, third-party coding agents such as Claude Code and Codex begin at Pro, and the CLI ships on every plan.
